Agency and Self-Determination Theory Generate Intrinsic Motivation
The core values are not merely concepts at TCS, but are deeply rooted in research and are part of the daily fabric of the school. This final article in the series explores the purposeful connection between student agency and Self-Determination Theory. The past three articles shared how curiosity fosters a growth mindset, the connection between compassion and Attribution Theory, and how courage is cultivated by building an understanding of Self-Efficacy Theory.
We recognize that student agency—the capacity to take ownership of one's learning and make choices—is essential for fostering intrinsic motivation and deep engagement.

We align our approach to student agency with Self-Determination Theory (SDT), which identifies three basic psychological needs that drive motivation: autonomy, competence, and relatedness.
To nurture autonomy, we offer students choices in their learning experiences, allowing them to select topics, projects, and learning pathways that align with their interests and goals. This empowers them to take ownership of their education and develop a sense of control over their learning journey. We also guide students to set their own learning goals and participate in the planning process, fostering self-direction and intrinsic motivation. Furthermore, we encourage students to reflect on their learning experiences, identify their strengths and areas for growth, and make adjustments to their learning strategies. This fosters metacognitive skills and a sense of responsibility for their own progress.
To foster competence, we provide learning experiences that are challenging yet attainable, allowing students to experience a sense of accomplishment and build confidence in their abilities. We offer differentiated instruction and personalized support to ensure that all students have the resources they need to succeed, helping them develop a sense of mastery and competence. We also recognize and celebrate effort and progress, not just outcomes, encouraging a growth mindset and a sense of efficacy.
To cultivate relatedness, we foster a supportive and inclusive learning environment where students feel connected to their peers and teachers. This sense of belonging enhances their motivation and engagement. We encourage collaborative learning experiences where students can learn from and support each other, fostering a sense of shared responsibility and strengthening social bonds. Our teachers prioritize building strong, trusting relationships with their students, creating a safe and supportive space for learning and growth.
By aligning student agency with Self-Determination Theory, we aim to increase intrinsic motivation and engagement, foster a love of learning and a growth mindset, develop self-directed and responsible learners, and create a caring and inclusive learning community. Ultimately, we believe that empowering students with agency leads to deeper learning, greater well-being, and a lifelong joy for learning.
In our series, which has focused on the core values of TCS—curiosity, compassion, courage, and agency—I have hopefully given you a glimpse into the student experience. Ideally, you would come visit us and ask clarifying questions to truly see the magnificent environment at TCS. Our desire is to stay connected not only with best practices in the field of education, but also with longitudinal studies in both neuroscience and psychological research to maximize student outcomes. Our aim is to foster lifelong curiosity, compassionate leadership, and the ability to embrace diverse perspectives.
