Foundational Knowledge
In this 9-week phase students solidify core skills in math, literacy, and World Knowledge. With easy access to a wealth of information online, our students are growing up in a world where critical thinking and analytical skills are essential. This phase equips students with the tools to navigate and learn from the vast information around them, helping them grow as confident, independent learners.

World Knowledge is an interdisciplinary area of study that draws on culture, science, history, and technology. Each class explores a theme as the launching pad of their learning journey. Teachers use students’ prior knowledge and questions to guide them toward a lens through which to explore how the world is interconnected. For example, the Exploration Class focuses on “Our Community” and the Discovery Class I learns about “Our City, Austin.” The curriculum follows an inquiry-based approach, grounded in constructivist theory, encouraging students to explore ideas and concepts in depth.

Math at TCS is about understanding the "why" behind numbers. Students develop number sense through exploration, real-world problem solving, and games that foster reasoning and analytical thinking. From an early age, students work both independently and collaboratively, sharing ideas and learning from one another.
As part of developing number sense and computational skills, TCS adopts the Number Talks practice. To connect all other areas of mathematical fields of study, TCS incorporates Mindset Mathematics’ Big Ideas as a starting point to highlight how various areas of math are interconnected. While Mindset Mathematics serves as a starting point, we enhance the learning experience with additional programs and approaches.

Our literacy program combines word study, reading, and writing, drawing from multiple established teaching methods.
Word Study
TCS adopts the Fundations - Wilson’s Language Training program to build phonological skills for all students. As students become fluent decoders and encoders, we expand their vocabulary development and word recognition skills.
Reading
Reading is the foundation of lifelong learning. Early readers at TCS build confidence through carefully selected books that allow them to practice decoding skills step by step. As they grow into fluent readers, we guide them in developing strong reading habits, providing opportunities to think critically about what they read, ask questions, and make connections that deepen their understanding. Our goal is to nurture curious, capable readers who find joy in exploring the world through books.
Writing
Writing is a powerful tool for students to share their discoveries, ideas, and perspectives with the world. As they explore new topics and engage in meaningful learning, we guide them in building strong writing skills through clear, structured techniques that help them organize their thoughts with confidence. Writing isn’t just a skill; it’s a form of communication and a way to actively participate in our community.
