Learning at TCS

The Compass School is designed around three divisional programs: Early Childhood (PK–Kindergarten), Childhood (Grades 1–6), and Adolescence (Grades 7–8). We are currently serving learners in our Exploration program and Discovery Class I & II within the Childhood Division as we grow toward our full divisional model.

Within the Childhood Division, students learn in intentionally designed dual-age communities that foster mentorship, leadership, and developmental growth.

Each classroom is led by an Anchor Teacher who guides daily academic instruction and cultivates a strong classroom culture. In addition, every student is supported by a Learning Coach — a dedicated mentor who partners with families, supports goal-setting, and helps learners reflect on their progress. Together, this structure ensures that each learner is both academically challenged and personally known.

At The Compass School, learning begins with a strong academic foundation. The majority of the school year is devoted to building essential skills in literacy, mathematics, scientific reasoning, and historical understanding. Foundational knowledge is taught explicitly and intentionally, ensuring students develop the competence and confidence necessary for deeper inquiry.

From this base, learning expands through Cultural Investigations and Deep Dives. Cultural Investigations connect classroom study to Austin and the wider world, strengthening interdisciplinary understanding and cultural competence. During Deep Dives, students develop and pursue open-ended questions, conduct research, and synthesize their learning in public exhibitions that demonstrate growth and mastery.

Students also participate in Innovation Lab three times each week. Grounded in design thinking protocols, Innovation Lab is a collaborative, hands-on environment where learners prototype ideas, test solutions, and refine their thinking through iteration and feedback. This applied learning experience reflects our belief that education should prepare students not only to understand the world, but to thoughtfully shape it.

This intentional rhythm — foundations, investigations, deep inquiry, and applied design — creates a structured yet dynamic learning experience. By shaping instruction around each class community within a coherent academic program, The Compass School supports intellectual rigor, social development, and emotional growth.
